Before I retired, I worked as a publicist for the arts. Can't tell you how many times a reporter/writer would show up for an (arts) event, then leave suddenly to cover bad news. "If it bleeds, it leads." The reporters loved covering 'soft' stories - it burned out their souls, all the blood, hatred etc, some would tell me. But the imperative was to cover the bad stuff.
