… to speakers of the same language because our understanding of color is shaped by the words we use. Linguists believe that the earliest human languages only had words for black, white, and possibly red. Other colors came later. Blue is often cited as being generally last to emerge. However, if you speak Russian, you know two words for what most others would call blue: goluboy and siniy. They are not types of blue, like cerulean and cobalt are to speakers of English. They are separate colors, and no Russian word exists that would accurately describe them both.
