I definitely grew up in a household where "the boy" got preferential treatment. Years and years later, I had a huge blowout with my mother over this. How she was unfailingly fawning over my brother; critical and sometimes even mean to me. Anyway, when I called her on it, she looked at me, bewildered. "But you're the girl."
