I say this as someone is 97% north african/middle eastern and 3% Jewish who's been a victim of racism. Allow the past to be the past, all the while recognizing that those eras were FAR FAR FAR HIDEOUSLY FAR from perfect as cultures, societies, and in their response to/understanding of Jesus's message.
Many of those statues/paintings were created by artists with HUGE faith. (Michelangelo for instance.) Plus Jesus is also the Christ...And absolutely the Christ is 'large' enough to contain all images. Let's live with the tension, as mystics put it. Attempt to live with the dark/light and not respond, please, with darkness in turn, with destruction and violence.
Let's encourage artists today to create Jesus as the Jew he was.
A thought that just occurred to me, in case it's occurring to you. I am NOT advocating keeping up Confederate flags, names on buildings etc. Confederate statues should go to museums - like holocaust museums - with the words "NEVER AGAIN."
