It WAS self-defense for me, back in the day when I spouted platitudes like a tea kettle steam. Entering into a friend's pain...SO, well, painful. If only because of how helpless I felt. Other times because their pain reminded me of my unexplored own. Now, I work on fighting the urge to defuse the situation - I listen.

I'm a recovering platitude-pronouncer but gaining on it.
