My father went further
We, his children, were trained to think for themselves
To question everything and everyone
Including him
And to make our own decisions
Always willing to admit to any mistake
While trying to learn from them
He shocked me more than once by his openness to new ideas
Including showing support for my opposition to the war in Vietnam
There was nothing we need be ashamed to tell him
