Substitute poetry/poems for fan mail and you have described the life of a poet. I actually sent Garrison Keillor a fan mail/poem I wrote, inspired by a quote from one of his articles. The gatekeeper responded back, saying she was for sure sending it on to Garrison but not to count on a reply. So far, no reply. But, as you say, the reply is not the point
